The Saar Historical Museum, which opened in 1988, gives a detailed insight into the turbulent history of the Saarland in the 20th century.
Covering an area of 1,600m², the museum's permanent exhibition uses archaeological finds to illustrate how a Renaissance palace came to be built on the remains of a medieval fort. It also tackles the subjects of the First World War and the Nazi period. You can even view an actual detention cell used by the Gestapo.
Daily life at this time is portrayed using photos, posters and excerpts from films, while a "rubble kitchen" from the post-war years shows how people managed to cook, clean and live in unimaginably cramped conditions.
Closed on Mondays
Villeroy & Boch’s head office can today be found in the former Benedictine Abbey of Mettlach. Behind the Baroque facade, visitors can experience more than 260 years of ceramic and corporate history. The exhibition "Keravision", a ceramics museums and a museum’s café in the style of 1892 tell the success story of a family dynasty.
Century-old traditions and innovative design concepts all in one await you here. More than just ceramics The exhibition "Keravision" combines over 260 years of Villeroy & Boch’s history with a presentation of the current product range. The adjoining ceramics museum reflects on the art of ceramics and culture over time (and features the special papal crockery designed by Villeroy & Boch for Pope Benedikt XVI). Another display on table culture is an innovative way to present everything worth knowing about how to lay a table. Last but not least, visitors can visit an information centre about bathroom and kitchen design and tiles. A truly beautiful museum’s cafés If you have been to Dresden, the style of the Villeroy & Boch museum’s café will ring a bell. The café is designed to resemble the famous dairy shop "Pfunds" in Dresden with more than 15000 hand-painted tiles that were manufactured according to original models of the 19th century. Talking about German attention to detail ...
The Saarland’s oldest building The "Old Tower" can be found admidst an English-style landscaped park. It is part of an old abbey church dating back to 994 and is therefore very likely the oldest building in the Saarland. Quite a contrast is the contemporary art installation "Living Planet Square" that can be found next to the tower. Everybody likes a bargain ... Nor far from the Villeroy & Boch complex, Mettlach’s city centre invites visitors to browse a number of outlet stores. Don’t miss out on some good shopping here!

Come here if you want to experience Earth history and see how the dinosaurs lived. Cutting-edge animation technology and sophisticated audiovisual methods let you relive the course of 4.5 billion years of the History of the Earth. Monstrous scorpions, giant dragonflies and ravenous dinosaurs are just some of the life-forms that are brought back to life in the exhibition halls of Gondwana. Forces of natures such as floods or space impacts are re-enacted to create an impression of what life was like all those years ago. Outside the premises, small and big explorers can try to dig up some fossils themselves on 700 square metres.
